Building Stronger Teams Through Fair Chances
Every April, the NFL Draft captures national attention. It’s a moment rooted in belief — belief in preparation, in potential, and in what someone can become when given the opportunity.
Fair Chance Month carries that same spirit beyond the field. It reminds us that opportunity shapes workplaces, communities, and the systems that decide who gets a shot.
Game Plan for Opportunity is a collaboration between NFL Inspire Change – the league’s social justice initiative – and the Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO). Inspired by the NFL Draft and Fair Chance Month, the campaign highlights how fair-chance hiring opens doors to talented, motivated individuals ready to contribute.
Just as NFL teams evaluate players based on readiness, work ethic, and potential, businesses can do the same.
Because when justice-impacted individuals find work, communities grow stronger — and our entire economy scores.
Meet Yessica and Daniel
They both work at Bread & Cie.
Yessica helped interview Daniel when he applied for a pastry position. She saw something in him — a strong attitude, a willingness to learn, and a sense of optimism. Daniel brought that energy to the job from day one.
They may not work in the same department, but their connection shows up in how they move through the workplace.
They both root for the Seattle Seahawks.
They both work hard.
They both show up with a positive attitude.
They both believe in helping others and doing the job right.
For Yessica, what stands out most is Daniel’s character. She describes him as kind, respectful, and someone who consistently brings a positive presence to the team. Even in brief interactions, that attitude leaves an impression.
She believes those qualities — empathy, willingness to help, and genuine care for others — are what build a strong and supportive workplace.
Daniel sees it from a similar perspective.
To him, being a team player is simple: help others, do a good job, and show up with the right attitude. He values being part of a team where people respect one another and enjoy working together.
“Everyone here is respectful and fun to work with,” he says.
One of them is justice-impacted.
The other is not.
What matters most is how they show up today.
Yessica believes a person’s past does not define who they are. “People can grow, learn, and become better,” she says. “That’s why it’s important to give everyone a fair chance.”
Daniel agrees. “There is good in everyone,” he says. “People make mistakes and learn from them.”
At Bread & Cie, those beliefs translate into action — in how people are hired, how they are supported, and how they are treated once they’re part of the team.
What Yessica and Daniel share matters more than what separates them.
Optimism.
Respect.
Work ethic.
When employers choose to see potential, not background, teams grow stronger. And stronger teams build stronger communities.
