This story is part of a three-part series highlighting the impact of the Center for Employment Opportunities’ Emerging Leaders Program (ELP), a paid internship designed to help justice-impacted individuals build professional skills, gain work experience, and take steps toward long-term economic mobility. In this installment, we share the journey of Joshua, whose experience in ELP helped shape a new career path and strengthen a growing sense of purpose.
Joshua first heard about the ELP program from his manager, who encouraged him to apply. “I appreciate his belief that this would be a valuable step for my professional development,” he said.
During his internship, Joshua served as a Policy Advocacy Fellow. His work focused on amplifying the voices of justice-impacted people and supporting systemic change. He helped lead the Advocacy Leadership Committee, equipping others to share their stories and engage with local and state leaders. Joshua testified before the New York City Council, participated in rallies and press conferences, and met directly with lawmakers at the New York State Capitol in Albany.
“I wasn’t just learning about change, I was actively creating it.”
Joshua also strengthened his professional habits, focusing on time management and goal setting. These skills, combined with his leadership experience, prepared him for his current role as a Site Supervisor at Block by Block.
“Rebuilding your life after incarceration is a journey,” he said. “The Emerging Leaders Program is that village. A community that’s here to help.”
Joshua’s story reflects the power of a fair chance and the importance of investing in people’s potential. Through mentorship, structure, and paid work, the Emerging Leaders Program creates space for participants to discover new pathways and define success on their own terms.
